We love Sunshine Supplies!

We love Sunshine Supplies!

May 6, 2010 Gary Norwood from Sunshine Supplies launched a Floating Island in the Reed-Harvey Park Children’s Fishing Pond, in Center Point, Alabama.  Sunshine Supplies donated the island to Center Point!

The island is about 3 feet by 4 feet and planted with flowering wetland plants.  These islands are made of special material to encourage root growth and buoyancy.  The plant roots pull nitrogen, phosphorus, and other elements from the water through their roots.  The island (called Bass Haven©) provides shade and food for fish.  Center Point is the ONLY place in Alabama that has this experimental water-treatment island. Gary Norwood and Center Point Public Works Shanda Williams will be monitoring its success and planning for more for other Center Point ponds.

Here’s a science fact from Floating Islands International : one square foot of BioHaven® floating island is sufficient to reduce nitrate by over 10 grams per day, ammonia by up to 0.7 gram per day, and phosphate by 0.5 grams per day. See more about islands – click HERE

Here’s a fun fact – turtles, frogs and fish love floating islands. Take a walk around the children’s pond in Reed-Harvey Park and look for turtles soaking up the sun!
